Reducing hazardous waste, saving £200k a year

Challenge

High hazardous waste volumes across the site were driven by cross-contamination and inconsistent practices between different stakeholder groups.

Clinical, operational and catering teams were all handling waste differently, with no shared standard. This led to elevated disposal costs and ongoing operational inefficiencies that were hard to pin down without a proper review.

What we did

We delivered a targeted staff engagement programme, working directly with the teams responsible for handling waste day-to-day.

Bin infrastructure and placement were redesigned to make correct segregation the easy option, and clearer guidance was introduced across all groups. The focus throughout was on reducing hazardous waste at source and increasing opportunities for reuse.

The changes delivered high cost and environmental impact reductions, including £200k in annual savings.

Compliance improved alongside this, and more sustainable waste behaviours are now embedded across teams, not just in a single department.
