CASE STUDIES / officeMulti-site waste audit reveals 49% recycling potential
Challenge
A large office portfolio needed clearer visibility of what was actually being thrown away across its sites.
Waste was being managed the same way at every location, with no data to show which materials made up the bulk of it or where the highest costs were hiding.
Without that visibility, the client had no evidence-based way to prioritise where to act first, and no way to build a business case for change with senior stakeholders.
What we did
We completed material-level analysis across multiple sites, physically sorting and categorising what ended up in general waste rather than relying on estimates.
This gave us a clear picture of recurring waste streams across the portfolio, not just at one location.
From there, we mapped practical opportunities for better segregation at source, changes to procurement that would reduce waste before it was created, and ways to engage employees so new habits would actually stick.
The results49% diversion identified, £14k+ saved per site
The audit found that 49% of general waste was, in fact, recyclable, meaning nearly half of what was sent to landfill didn't need to be.
This gave the client a strong, evidence-based case for change rather than a guess.
On the back of this, £14k+ in savings was identified per site, and the findings gave the client a stronger basis for commercial waste reduction across the UK more broadly.
